My poor keeshond was matted and needed grooming - I told the Delafield WI groomer that I knew she was matted and would need additional brushing and that I would be happy to pay for this when I dropped the dog off at 10 am. They called about 3 and said I could pick her up at 5! They shaved her tail - her britches were completely gone - I was horrified - I asked the manager why - they said she was matted - and tried to tell me the dog needed to come in more than once a year - I had been grooming her myself - but siply didn't have time - They never answered me as to why they didn't contact me prior to shaving her - They did groom her correctly 2 years ago. NEVER NEVER shave a Keeshond tail and britches & NEVER NEVER USE PETCO !!!

OK I have read all of these complaints. I am so mad I want to kick someones tail. I have been a groomer for over half of my working life 25 and a half years actually. Here are my comments. A excellent groomer (which in my grooming salon we get other salons messes and have to either fix the groom OR have to RETRAIN the dogs) never TELLS a client that they will DEFINATELY get a FULL GROOM on a PUP. Its WHAT the PUP will let you do. YOU HEAR ME ITS WHAT THE PUP WILL LET YOU DO. AS for a matted dog. Grooming the dog and not calling the pet parent and letting them know they cannot get through the matts and GIVING the pet parent the heads up of what is going to happen is SHAME ON YOU GROOMER. I let the pet parents hang out in my salon they read the newspaper, watch TV, talk to us. Its a relaxed atmosphere at my place. I have trained numerous groomers in my career and they have ALL went on in their grooming an have become excellent groomers. Pet owners do your research. ASK OTHER PET OWNERS if they have RECENTLY been to a certain grooming salon. REMEMBER also brushing and combing if you have a full coated dog IS your responsibility. If you can't get through the matts then the groomer WILL have a hard time getting through them also. So, expect extra time spent on your dog and also an extra charge. If the groomer cannot get through the matts the phone call will be made (IN MY GROOMING SALON that's the rule of thumb) and let you know what's going to happen.

Cutting a dog: I cannot believe the owner was not informed of this. Accidents do happen. But, pet owners should be informed IMMEDIATELY.

I can proudly say in all my grooming years I have cut 1 dog and it was a little nick. I have NEVER given a dog razor burn EVER. Groomers switch your blades out precut, bath and then finishing cut is an awesome way of detouring clipper burn. Keep them Clean an disinfected. The cleaning of your equipment is a little expensive but in the long run clipper burn, infections, will not happen.

My advise is GROOMERS slow down. You will not only get a better groom on your dogs BUT ALSO get a returning client over and over and over again. Kind words to dogs is so rewarding the dogs will like you better and you will be more productive in the grooming life of that dog.

FINALLY to the pet owners. Believe me there IS awesome groomers out there. Bad groomers find another profession. I have worked in TONS of other grooming salons and I have seen it all. That's why I have my OWN grooming salon and we do it correct the first time and you will always be greeted with a smile when you walk in and a smile when you leave.

I work for Petco and, not to be biased, I agree with groommgr.

A years worth of matting is neglect, regardless of how much time you have or don't. Matting collects bacteria, fyi. To top it off, imagine having a knot on your head near your scalp.

If the pants and tail were matted, then they needed to be shaved. Dematting a dog, especially that breed with that coat and hadn't seen a groomer in a year, is extremely painful to the dog. This is pure neglect on your part and you sure as hell can't blame the groomer for this one!
